1.3964 is higher-performance austenitic stainless steel that provides approximately twice the yield strength of regular 3xx series stainless steels and improved corrosion performance. Like some super duplex stainless steels, it also uses an increased nitrogen content to improve the strength, so is sometimes referred to as a nitrogen-strengthened alloy. Additions of manganese also push up the strength through solid solution strengthening. It is widely used in a variety of marine and industrial applications. Compared with Alloy 316L, it contains increased chromium and molybdenum additions which support the improved corrosion resistance.
Following is heat treatment way of 1.3964,X2CrNiMnMoNNb21.16.5.3,X2CrNiMnMoNNb21-16-5-3 forged parts
The stainless steel X2CrNiMnMoNNb21-16-5-3 forged parts shall be melted by one of the following processes:electric furnace with separate degassing and refining optional or electric furnace followed by electroslag-consumable remelting.
X2CrNiMnMoNNb21-16-5-3 forged parts will be supplied to this specification that complies with the definitions given in ASTM A788.
1.3964 forging material shall be sufficient to develop a wrought structure throughout the part.A forging ratio of 3:1 minimum shall be achieved.
The chemical composition of each cast or heat for 1.3964 forging parts will be determined on a heat/cast basis and shall conform to the requirements of the chemical composition for 1.3964as listed below When consumable remelting processes are used,a chemical analysis shall be taken from a remelted ingot (or the product of a remelted ingot)for there melt heat analysis.
Methods and practices relating to chemical analyses required by this specification shall be in accordance with Methods,Practices, and Definitions A 751.Other national or international recognised methods may be used provided they are advised on the certification."

Hardness testing of 1.3964 forged parts shall be performed in accordance with procedures specified in ISO 6506,parts 1 through 4 or ASTM E10(Brinell),or ISO 6508,parts 1 through 3 or ASTM E18(Rockwell).Portable hardness testers meeting the requirements of ASTM E110 and ISO 6506 (all parts)or ASTM E10,or ISO 6508(all parts)or ASTM E18,as applicable, may be used for hardness testing.ISO 18265 or ASTM E140 shall be used for the conversion of hardness readings for materials within the scope of their application.
At least one Rockwell or Brinell hardness test shall be performed on the QTC after the final heat treatment cycle and the result recorded on the material test certificate.
All 1.3964 forging materials supplied to this specification will be hardness tested. The maximum hardness shall be 35 HRC. Sufficient hardness tests shall be made to establish the actual hardness of the steel being examined.
Individual readings exceeding the value permitted may be considered acceptable if the average of several readings taken within close proximity does not exceed the value permitted and no individual reading is greater than 2 HRC or equivalent Brinell above the specified value.
