1.6511 is is a heat treatable and low alloy steel containing chromium, nickel and molybdenum. It has high toughness and strength in the heat treated condition.

FOllowing is 36CrNiMo4 forging parts melting requirement
Electric arc furnace or blast furnace and oxygen blast converter shall be used, each with subsequent ladle treatment;
Steel shall be vacuum degassed;
Steel shall be non-radioactive;
Quality class shall beat least MQ in accordance with ISO 6336-5 or DIN 3990-5;
Chemical Composition of 36CrNiMo4 forged shafts
Chemical analysis shall be made from a test sample taken just prior to the pouring or during pouring and shall conform to the chemical requirements in the following table:

Mechanical Properties of the Raw Material of 36CrNiMo4 forging gear shafts
The tensile test pieces shall be prepared in accordance with EN ISO 6892-1 and the impact test pieces in accordance with ISO 148-1. The arithmetic average obtained from the 3 values of the impact testshall be greater than or equal to the value of impact defined in the mechanical properties table. An individual value of up to 15% less than the average defined in the mechanical properties table is allowed. The properties below are applied for quenched and tempered test pieces.

The mechanical properties defined above refer to 40 mm test specimen diameter.
Sample position:
36CrNiMo4 Forged shafts with D ≤ 250 mm: longitudinal (L) sample along the extension of the shaft end;
36CrNiMo4 Forged and shafts with D > 250 mm: transversal (Q) sample at the side of the larger diameter or the shaft end;
36CrNiMo4 Forged and Rolled rings: tangential (T) sample;
36CrNiMo4 Forged hollow body: transversal (Q) sample.
The test pieces shall be removed from a depth of ¼ of the piece diameter, for massive pieces, and ½ the thickness of hollow pieces. See figures in section
Heat treatment for the test pieces:
Austenitization: 840 °C, 2 hours;
Quenching: 60-80 °C, oil;
Temper: 200 °C, 2 hours followed by air cooling.
Supply Condition for 36CrNiMo4 Forged Pieces
Isothermal annealing heat treatment with maximum hardness of 250 HB;
Normalized and tempered with maximum hardness of 250 HB.
Forging Reduction of 36CrNiMo4 forging parts
The forging ratio relative to the areashall be > 5: 1 for continuous casting and rolled bars.
The forging ratio relative to the areashall be > 3: 1 for forged bars.
Ultrasonic inspectionshall be made in accordance with EN 10228-3, Quality Class 4 / Table 5. Note: Inspectionshall be performed with forged material in the final delivery condition.
Non-metallic inclusions / Cleanness of 36CrNiMo4 forging parts
The non-metallic inclusions shall be in accordance with ISO 4967 Method A or with ASTM E45A, which have acceptance criteria following the requirements presented in the table below:

Grain Size of 36CrNiMo4 forging round bars
Grain size G6 and finer; G5 grains are acceptable only if isolated and individual in accordance with EN-ISO 643 or DIN 50601 or ASTM E112-96.
The suppliershall provide in its certificate the grain size.
