MELT PRACTICE of AISI 4130 forged parts
5.1 Steels made to this specificationshall be produced using refining and melt practices that can produce steels that are free from detrimental defects. The electric furnace methodshall be used to produce steels for this specification. Refining practices including argon / oxygen decarburization and vacuum degassing are acceptable.
6.0 FORGING PRACTICE
6.1 Forging practiceshall be in accordance with ASTM A788.
7.0 REDUCTION RATIO
7.1 The minimum forging reduction ratio shall be 3 to 1.
8.0 HEAT TREATMENT of AISI 4130 forged parts
8.1 The heat treatment of steels furnished to this specification are as shown in Table 8.1a below. Batch and continuous heat treatment operations are specified in this section.

Continuous Furnace Operations of AISI 4130 forged rings
The austenitizing process shall beat temperatures sufficient to heat the bar in a short period of time to a completely austenitic state. Austenitizing must be conducted with temperatures high enough to transform all of the material mass to austenite but not high enough to promote excessive grain growth.
After austenitizing and before entering the tempering furnace the barshall be spray quenched.
The tempering process shall be done with zone temperatures to produce the desired tempering effect in a short period of time.
Time required in the austenitizing and tempering furnaces can vary based on the travel speed, bar diameter and length of the furnace.
Sufficient time in each furnace must be allowed to obtain the desired mechanical properties producing a microstructure equivalent to that obtained in a conventional quench and temper heat treatment process. The minimum and maximum conditions are shown in the table 8.2.5a below.
