Electric arc furnace or blast furnace and oxygen blast converter shall be used, each with subsequent ladle treatment;
Steel shall be vacuum degassed;
Steel shall be non-radioactive;
Calcium addition with the purpose of deoxidization is not allowed before the vacuum degassing;
Calcium can be added with the purpose of improving the casting quality (maximum of 15 ppm) in the refining process after the vacuum degassing;
Quality class shall beat least MQ in accordance with ISO 6336-5 or DIN 3990-5;
Standard EN 10084 shall be followed.

Tensile test pieces shall be prepared in accordance with EN ISO 6892-1 and impact test pieces in accordance with ISO 148-1. The properties below are applied for quenched and tempered test pieces.

The values of the table above are for test pieces with 30 mm of diameter.
The mechanical properties of 18crnimo7-6 forged material shall be proven by one tensile test piece and three impact test pieces (tests in accordance with EN 10002 and ISO 148-1). The arithmetic average obtained from the 3 values of the impact test shall be greater than or equal to the value of impact defined in the mechanical properties table. An individual value of up to 15% less than the average defined in the mechanical properties table is allowed.
The test specimens for the mechanical tests shall betaken in the longitudinal (L) direction when the diameter of the beam is ≤ 250 mm and in the transversal (Q) direction when the diameter of the beam is > 250 mm. These shall be removed from a depth of ¼ of the piece diameter, for massive pieces, and ½ the thickness of hollow pieces.
Heat treatment for the test pieces of 18crnimo7-6 forged parts:
• Austenitization: Minimum: 840 °C, minimum: 2 hours;
• Quenching: 60-80 °C, oil;
• Temper: Minimum: 200 °C, minimum: 2 hours followed by air cooling.
Hardenability of 18crnimo7-6 forging pinion shafts
Jominy testshall be made in accordance with EN 10084 standard. Quenching temperatureshall be 860 ± 5 °C.
When the hardenability is verified by calculation, the manufacturer shall give sufficient information for the customer to confirm the result.
Values calculated according with the SEP 1664: 2004-tab 12b can be used.

. Annealed with maximum hardness of 229 HB;
. Quenched and tempered to a hardness range of 179 – 229 HB;
. Normalized to a hardness range of 159 – 207 microstructure perlite ferrite.
Ultrasonic Inspection of all our 18CrNimo7-6 forging gear shafts
Ultrasonic inspectionshall be made in accordance with EN 10228-3 with the following acceptance criteria: Quality class 4
Note: Inspectionshall be performed with forged material in the final delivery conditions.
Non-metallic inclusions / Cleanness of 18crnimo7-6 forged rings
The non-metallic inclusions shall be in accordance with ISO 4967 Method A or with ASTM E45A, which have acceptance criteria following the requirements presented in the table below:
