AISI 440B is a high carbon martensitic stainless with moderate corrosion resistance good strength and the ability to obtain and keep excellent hardness (Rc 58) and wear resistance.
AISI 440B is widely used in Ball bearings and races, gage blocks, molds and dies, cutlery, valve components, knives and measuring instruments.
The chemical composition of AISI 440B forged material shall be made on samples which correspond to the top & bottom of the re -molten ingot used to the make the part according to ASTM E354, ASTM E1473, ASTM E2465 and ARP1313 for trace elements (lead, bismuth and selenium). Others than abovementioned standards may be used provided THAT they are approved by the purchaser.
Chemical analysis performed on final product shall conform to the variations specified in ASTM B880.

Microstructure:The average grain size shall be in the range of 5-9 ASTM E112. Mixed grain shall be avoided.The distribution of carbides shall be uniform.No segregation is allowed

Grade 440B stainless steel is annealed at 843-871°C (1550-1600°F) and then cooled very slowly in a furnace.
Grade 440B stainless steel is tempered at 148°C (300°F) to obtain maximum properties and the maximum hardness that can be obtained is RC 58.
