AISI 4340 is an ultra-high strength steel classified a medium-carbon, low-alloy steel. 4340 steel has high strength, ductility, toughness, creep resistance, and fatigue resistance relative to most other steels. Hardness ranging from 24 to 53 HRC can be achieved, depending on the heat treatment.
MELTING PRACTICE of SAE 4340 forged parts
Steel to this Specification shall be fully killed and made by the CVM process. Electric furnace vacuum degassed and electroslag-refined (ESR), or vacuum arc remelted (VAR), are acceptable alternates.
Fine grain melt practice shall be used to produce an austenite grain size of 5 or finer, as determined by ASTM E112, latest edition.
The melting and refining practice shall ensure an Quality finished wrought product in compliance with standard AMS 2301, latest edition.
Ladle chemistry (calcium treating) is permissible to accomplish inclusion shape control.
Chemical Composition of AISI 4340 forged shafts
C 0.38-0.43
Mn 0.60-0.80
P 0.035 max
S 0.040 max
Si 0.15-0.35
Ni 1.65-2.00
Cr 0.70-0.90

Analysis of each heat of SAE 4340 forged parts shall be made by the manufacturer.
An analysis may be made by the purchaser from a forging representing each heat. The chemical composition thus determined shall not vary from the requirements specified in clients technical manual by more than the limits permitted by ASTM A668.
The steel manufacturer may propose a modification in composition if, in his opinion, it is required to obtain the specified properties or if it will improve the product. Any contemplated change in composition shall be requested at the time of quotation and is subject to written approval of clients

FORGING PRACTICE of AISI 4340 forged shafts
The forging manufacturer shall perform, prior to forging, all material tests, analyses,NDE and inspections necessary to ensure that the raw material will produce an internally sound forging meeting ultrasonic test specifications as designated on the forging drawing, the cleanliness requirements of Aircraft Quality standard AMS 2301, and response to heat treatment to produce the specified properties at the locations designated.
Ingots shall be cogged into elongated billets and receive sufficient mechanical work to accomplish grain refinement, improved homogeneity and enhanced density throughout the section.
The billet shall be sectioned into individual blocks or multiples which shall be forged in the three principal axes so as to minimize directionality (anisotropy) of the mechanical properties and meet the requirements . The longitudinal axis of the cogged ingot shall be retained as the longitudinal axis of each block. The blocks shall be upset, forged horizontally to draw-out, then re-upset and forged to the final configuration, e.g., a pancake forging or elongated forging which may be sectioned and further upset into apancake forging. The upset forging reduction employed (approximately 40%) shall be
selected by the manufacturer in consideration of the original ingot size, geometry and prior working, to produce isotropic properties in the finished product.
After forging and prior to subsequent heat treatment, the AISI 4340 forgings shall be subjected to a cooling rate that will accomplish transformation and prevent surface cracking, flaking or other defects which may be detrimental to the intended use of the finished product.
Preliminary heat treatment may be given to improve subsequent processing.
The production of 4340 forged parts by cutting from a longitudinally forged billet or bar is not acceptable and parts produced in this manner shall be rejected.
A prolongation of a production SAE 4340 forging may be used for mechanical property testing with the following requirements:
The length of the prolongation i.e., thickness of the pancake forging, will be increased a minimum of one half the finished part length or thickness.
b. The tensile specimen(s) shall be taken immediately adjacent to the internal surface generated by sectioning for prolongation removal, following the quench and temper treatment.
Following is heat treatmetn way of SAE 4340 forged parts
Forge 850-1050oC, slow furnace cool.
Normalize 850-880, air cool.
Anneal 650-700, Cool slowly in controlled furnace
Stress relieve
In the quenched and tempered condition, about 30-50oC
below the tempering temperature. Air cool.
In the annealed condition, 600-650oC. Air cool.
Harden 830-860oC, oil quench
Temper 540-680oC hold for 1 hour min. at temperature, air cool.
Nitride Suitable for both liquid and gas nitriding.

Mechanical properties of AISI 4340 forged bars shall be determined on specimens machined from a pancake forging or prolongation thereof, which has been forged and heat treated with the balance of the forgings it represents.
The specimens shall be taken at mid-radius of the forging cross-section in a tangential orientation, and centrally located between the parallel faces of the pancake forging. Prolongation tensile and/or Charpy specimens shall be similarly oriented and adjacent to the section-face per technical manual
Mechanical property tests are to be conducted in accordance with ASTM A370, latest edition.
Standard ASTM 1/2 inch (13 mm) diameter tensile test specimens shall be used when the dimensions of the test material permit; in other instances, a sub-size specimen as defined in ASTM A370 may be used.
MICROSTRUCTURE REQUIREMENT of AISI 4340 forged bars
The microstructure at the test bar location is expected to exhibit a minimum of 50 percent martensite, as determined from a microscopical examination of a metallographically polished and etched specimen.
In cases of questionable interpretation, the attainment of the mechanical property requirements of Paragraph 6 shall be sufficient evidence of compliance.
QUALITY REQUIREMENTS of SAE 4340 forged parts
Forgings shall be free from cracks, seams, laps, shrinkage and other injurious
imperfections which, due to their nature or degree, would prevent fulfillment of the physical or mechanical requirements of the part.
The finished forging shall be magnetic particle inspected in accordance with ASTM A275, latest edition, and procedure ASTM E709, latest edition,
using the fluorescent method, and shall meet acceptance criteria as defined in Standard 21,125-00.
Ultrasonic inspection of the forging shall be conducted in accordance with the latest edition of ASTM A388, and shall meet acceptance criteria as defined in Standard 21,306-00.
