AISI 4330 is is a chromium-nickel-molybdenum alloy steel with a good hardenability and toughness. The material AISI 4330V mod. is basically an AISI 4330 steel with strength and hardenability increased by the addition of vanadium (V). The designation “modified” is used for a significantly higher addition of nickel.

Tensile properties shall be confirmed using standard round tension test specimens taken from the longitudinal axis of a full size prolongation after quench and tempering.
Charpy impact values shall be confirmed using standard full size test specimens taken from the transverse axis of a full size prolongation after quench and tempering
In lieu of a full size prolongation, test specimens may be taken from a representative separate test AISI 4330 forging after quench and tempering. This test forging must meet the same print requirements, be made from the same heat of material and manufacturing method, and be heat-treated in the same furnace charge, as the production forgings it represents.
For a maximum quenched wall thickness (T) up to 4 inches (101.6mm), test specimens shall be cut from the prolongation, or representative test forging, so that the mid-point of the tension specimen’s gauge length and the area under the notch of impact specimens is located 1/2-T from the nearest quenched surface.
For a maximum quenched wall thickness (T) in excess of 4 inches (101.6mm), test specimens shall be cut from the prolongation, or representative test forging, so that the mid-point of the tension specimen’s gauge length and the area under the notch of impact specimens is located a minimum of 1/4-T or 2 inches(50.8mm), whichever is greater, from the nearest quenched surface.
Tension and Charpy impact tests of AISI 4330V forged bars shall be completed for each heat of material per heat treat lot. Tension and Charpy impact tests and test specimen manufactureshall be completed in accordance with ASTM A370- 97A or later revision.
HARDNESS of AISI 4330V mod forged round bars
The Brinell Hardness (HB) of the finished part surface shall be 269-310 when measured in accordance with ASTM A370-97A.
ULTRASONIC EXAMINATION of AISI 4330V forged rings
All forgings shall be ultrasonic inspected by contact method in accordance with ASTM A388-95, or later revision, using a 1 inch (25.4mm) diameter, 2.25 MHz longitudinal beam transducer.
A reference block shall be utilized made of the same material as the forging with a 1/8-inch (3.18mm) diameter flat bottom hole, 4- 1/2 inches (114.3mm) deep. Scan two adjacent sides of the forging. No
indications are permissible larger than the indication received from the flat bottom hole in the reference block.
MARKING of finished AISI 4330V forged parts
Each forging shall be stamped with the manufacturer’s name or trademark and number or code traceable to the applicable material certificate.
