Specification for 4330 Vanadium Modified Alloy Steel forging rings
MATERIAL PROPERTY REQUIREMENTS AISI 4330V Mod forged rings
Chemical Composition Requirements of AISI 4330 forged rings
The chemical composition of the 4330 Vanadium Modified alloy steel forged rings shall conform to the following limits:
Alloy |
4330 Vanadium Modified* |
||||
Range | min. | max. | |||
Carbon | 0.28 | 0.36 | |||
Manganese | 0.40 | 1.00 | |||
Phosphorus | --- | 0.015 | |||
Sulfur | --- | 0.015 | |||

Nickel | 1.65 | 3.00 | |||
Vanadium | 0.05 | 0.12 |
The chemical composition of 4330 Vanadium Modified alloy steel may vary from each mill. In the event that the mechanical requirements defined in this section can be met, slightly higher quantities of
phosphorus (0.025% maximum) and sulfur (0.025% maximum) are permissible. Any deviation from this requirement will be based on actual demonstrated mechanical test results provided for each heat of steel
and approved by on a case-by-case basis."
Note: The chemical composition analysis procedures are defined in ASTM A751.

Note: The mechanical test procedures are defined in ASTM A370.
"The Charpy V-notch impact toughness shall be determined based on an average value of 3 (three) impact test specimens."
Specification for 4330 Vanadium Modified Alloy Steel forged rings
Mechanical testing of the 4330 Vanadium Modified alloy steel shall be performed at a frequency of 1 per heat for each heat treatment lot (furnace load)."
"The test location for the tensile, Charpy impact and hardness test samples shall betaken in such a manner to ensure that the mechanical properties defined in this specification are obtained in the critical load
carrying cross sections of the component as determined by Offshore Energy Services Engineering Department. Examples of critical load carrying cross sections include elevator ears, elevator doors,
elevator body, elevator door hinges, etc.). Also, a second test coupon shall betaken from the heat treated forging per API 8A and ASTM A668."
HEAT TREATMENT of AISI 4330V forged rings
"The 4330 Vanadium Modified alloy steel shall be normalized, quenched, & tempered OR quenched & tempered. It will be necessary to rough machine components having significant changes in cross sections
prior to heat treatment. The rough machining is required to ensure that during the heat treatment process, the required mechanical properties are obtained in the critical load carrying cross sections of the
components. See Figure 1 for an example of a test location in an elevator forging. As necessary, a test piece (prolongation) shall be run from the same heat and bar size or a test piece shall be machined to
represent the component critical cross section of the material being heat treated."
QUALITY of AISI 4330V forged rings
The materialshall be melted using a fully-killed practice.
The grain size (prior-austenite grain size) shall be ASTM grain size number of 5 or finer (fine grain) in accordance with the test methods per ASTM E112."
The 4330 Vanadium Modified alloy steel shall be free of cracks, mill laps, seams or other defects. Specification for 4330 Vanadium Modified Alloy Steel
The 4330 Vanadium Modified alloy steel shall have had a hot-work reduction ratio of at least 6:1. Depending on the size and type of component, the reductions ratios of 4:1 may be approved by
engineering."
The 4330 Vanadium Modified alloy steel shall be furnished in the quenched and tempered condition to meet the mechanical property requirements as specified in this specification."
5. MARKING of AISI 4330 forged rings
Each piece of the materialshall be identified with the heat number using low stress stamps.
